Bell Smith Springs
Clear, rocky streams and scenic canyons bordered by high sandstone cliffs and plants unique to Illinois. The trail consists of seven miles of interconnected trails, featuring strange and wonderful rock formations, such as Devil’s Backbone, Boulder Falls and a natural rock bridge.
Dolan Lake and Campground
Hamilton County F&W Area also known as Dolan Lake , is a 1,683 acre site ideal for outdoor enjoyment. The property was acquired by the State of Illinois in 1960 and in 1962 a earthen damn was constructed for a 75 acre lake. The lake has 3 miles of shoreline and maximum depth is 18 feet. The site is one of gently rolling hills, with 1,300 acres being open for hunting. Most of the hunting area consists of small, open fields bordered by heavy fence rows, border plantings of warm season grasses, lespedeza and small food plots for wildlife food and cover.
Garden of the Gods
One of the most photographed locations in the state, Garden of the Gods’ scenic beauty is extraordinary. In the recreation area you can hike, camp, nature watch or picnic.
The Observation Trail features unique sandstone rock formations and panoramic views of the surrounding Garden of the God Wilderness.
Iron Furnace
The Illinois Iron Furnace is the only remaining iron furnace structure in the state of Illinois. Iron was manufactured at the Illinois Furnace by the charcoal blast method. The furnace was built on a dry laid limestone foundation. The exterior of the furnace was manufactured of large limestone blocks quarried near the town of Cave-In-Rock.
Millstone Bluff
A woodchip 3/4-mile trail interprets the ancient Indian village site on the top of this bluff. A noticeable high point, Millstone Bluff was utilized by both the Woodland and Mississippian Indians. The preservation of natural heritage sites like this one will enable us to uncover more about these past cultures.
Rim Rock Trail
A wonderfully scenic trail, Rim Rock National Recreation Trail leads around the rim of a rock escarpment, hence its name. Mid-way along the trail is an opportunity to descend wooden stairs, and pass between rock slabs to reach the hollow below. Read the sign about how settlers used Ox-lot Cave before returning the way you came or take the lower trail back to the parking lot.
